Austin Sedation Dentistry
For some people, the thought of visiting a dentist elicits tremendous panic. An estimated 40 million Americans don’t receive the care they need because they suffer with dental phobia. Sedation dentistry allows us to provide safe, relaxing dental care for fearful patients.
Who Would Benefit from Sedation Dentistry?
Although sedation dentistry brings peace of mind to patients who suffer from dental anxiety, it can also be great for patients who:
- Cannot hold the mouth open for extended time
- Don’t easily become numb
- Endured a traumatic dental experience in the past
- Have a strong gag reflex
- Hate the smells and sounds associated with dental office
- Need hours of restorative work or multiple dental visits
How Sedation Dentistry Works
For patients with mild nervousness, the dentist may recommend nitrous oxide. This colorless, odorless gas, also called laughing gas, allows patients to relax and enter a state of calm as they inhale the gas through a facemask. The effects of laughing gas dissipate when we remove the mask, so you can drive home on your own accord.
A deeper level of sedation dentistry is available for patients who feel particularly apprehensive. Oral conscious sedation combines a dose of an anti-anxiety medication taken one hour before the appointment with nitrous oxide administered at our office. A companion should drive you to our office and home from the visit because effects of the sedation can linger. Most patients experience a state of deep relaxation and will remember little about the appointment.
